coasters

On the weekend I made a set of these coasters as a gift. I googled Sashiko embroidery and used the designs I found to machine embroider the coasters. I love Sashiko embroidery and the proper ones that are done by hand are just gorgeous. I didn't have time to do hand embroidery so the machine was the next best thing.

I am happy with how they turned out. It was quite tricky drawing the designs on paper. They are all geometric and require precise angles, circles and straight lines. Trying to fit a design into a pre-determined square measurement was tricky. (In hindsight, I could have just printed the images and traced the designs) My stitching lines are a bit wonky as well, but I am happy with the end result.

The design is embroidered on linen, which I interfaced first. It made it nice and sturdy for embroidery. On the back I used some canvas from Ikea. I didn't put anything in between as the interfaced linen and canvas made them sturdy enough.

I hope the recipient will find them useful.

  1. They are awesome! I cannot believe you've done it on the machine, wouldn't be easy! Well done:)

  2. How did you attach the canvas back to the top? Did you just top-stitch them together ? Or did you sew right sides together and then turn through and slip stitch the opening? Or other ?
