art smock for my little artist

I finally finished it - the art smock for M. I am pretty sure I cut it out to sew more than 3 months ago and I don't know why it took me so long to finish it. I found it among my other UFOs and this morning decided it was time to finish it.

The fabric is rain-coating from Spotlight. Its very light but waterproof. The starting pattern for the smock was Petite Artiste Smock from the Sew Liberated book. I scaled it down significantly though as the original pattern is for 4-6 year olds. The pattern also calls for contrasting bias to finish the edges and elastic casings, but I didn't bother with that. Just turned the edges under and top stitched.

The smock was a success. It fits M, but has lots of room to grow (its like a dress on her at the moment!). She happily put it on and went straight to work. She loves painting (both with brushes and hands) and now I am happy too that she won't paint all over her clothes.

p.s. love all those crazy facial expressions; it is so much fun trying to do a photo-shoot with a 2 year old!
