reversible bucket hat

One of the projects I made recently was a reversible bucket hat for Maria. The pattern I used was “Reversible Bucket Hat” from “Oliver + S Little Things to Sew” book.

It was a fairly easy project, with the only tricky bit being the sewing of the top of the hat to the sides. I deviated from the instructions on how to attach the brim and assemble the hat, and did it my own way. The end result  was the same (only with much less hand stitching compared to the pattern instructions). I did, however, increase the height of the side of the hat by 1/2 inch. My sister-in-law recommended to increase it and I’m glad I did. It provides more depth and the fit is perfect.

I am very happy with how the hat turned out, but it’s lacking one thing – ties! The hat seems to always fly off Maria’s head when there is breeze. Since the hat is reversible, the ties need to be on both sides but without too much bulk. I think a simple solution would be to hammer in 2 small eyelets and thread the ties through them, with a knot on each end of each tie. That way the ties will be able to be pulled though on either side of the hat. I haven’t tried it yet as I don’t have any eyelets, but as soon as I do I will test out my theory.
